THE SHORT VERSION
REPLIT TOOK THE COUPON — $100M+ OF AI SPEND JUMPS TO OPENAI ON 30% OFF
OpenAI offered Replit more than 30% off to win a contract worth over $100 million a year, The Information reported on October 24, after Anthropic declined to extend Replit's existing discount without a higher spending commitment. Replit is moving most of the money it pays to power its coding agent from Anthropic to OpenAI.
Replit CEO Amjad Masad told the audience at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 16 that the company was “no longer working with Anthropic,” calling the decision a matter of “cost, partnership, and performance” and adding, “I think ChatGPT is better now.” He walked the breakup claim back within a day; seven Claude models remain in Replit's catalog, and OpenAI is now simply the default.
The default is the whole game: most Replit users never touch the model picker, so the switch routes the bulk of the platform's AI usage to OpenAI without anyone choosing. The Information paired the deal with Rippling figures showing OpenAI's share of coding work jumping from 16% in May to 52%, while Anthropic's fell from 57% to 18%.
