THE SHORT VERSION

Anthropic yanked Replit's discount first — and its IPO papers land as soon as tomorrow

The Information's October 24 report, “Anthropic's Margin is OpenAI's Opportunity,” shows OpenAI undercutting Anthropic on price for the big customers that buy AI models to write software — and it is working. Online-learning company DataCamp was offered a 40% discount on the condition that it use OpenAI's Codex coding agent.

The switch cuts both ways: Anthropic had ended a discount it was giving Replit, which helped push the $100-million-a-year customer to OpenAI. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has commented publicly on the figures.

The timing stings for Anthropic: IFR reported it plans to file its IPO paperwork publicly as soon as October 26, and any filing would show investors how much of its revenue comes from coding customers like these.

Satirical cartoon: a small robot carrying a laptop walks out of Anthropic's shop, past a FULL PRICE sign and an arms-crossed robot shopkeeper, toward OpenAI's green shop where a crowd of cheerful robots streams in under a giant yellow 30% OFF banner.
