THE SHORT VERSION

Britain's new AI plague-defense lab runs on OpenAI and Anthropic's dime

Britain is establishing the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL), which the government calls the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, with £100 million of government funding behind it. OpenAI and Anthropic will commit up to £200 million between them — in compute and model credits rather than cash — plus trusted access to their most capable relevant models, through OpenAI's Rosalind Biodefense programme.

The lab will pair frontier AI with biological-science talent to spot emerging biological threats earlier and accelerate vaccines, treatments and other countermeasures. Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research are named as research partners. The government's own announcement names the tension plainly: increasingly capable AI systems ‘could lower barriers to harmful activity.’

Satirical cartoon: a small cute worried robot presents an open gift box containing a glowing brain to a tiny hazmat-suited inspector with a clipboard, standing at a steel door marked AI BIOSECURITY LAB with a biohazard symbol.
