THE SHORT VERSION

Meta's Muse hit 10 million U.S. downloads in 40 days — and it keeps beating ChatGPT on retention

Sensor Tower estimates put Meta's standalone AI agent Muse at 10.9 million downloads worldwide in the 40 days after its September 8 debut, with 10.2 million of those in the United States — placing it among just 12 mobile apps to cross 10 million U.S. downloads that fast since 2015. The company is Club Threads/Disney+/Pokémon GO.

Downloads are only the beginning: Muse kept 30% of U.S. users after seven days and 23% after fourteen, against 19% and 16% for ChatGPT, Claude and Grok on average. It reached 2.5 million daily active users on October 16, up 15% week over week. Sensor Tower says Muse took 39% of Meta's total October ad spend.

Unlike a conventional chatbot, Meta positions Muse as an agent that does things — opening a browser, filling out forms, continuing work after the app closes — which makes its retention edge the number that matters.
