THE SHORT VERSION

Microsoft's AI outdiagnosed doctors 83% to 36% on the hardest cases

Microsoft published its MAI-DxO system in Science: several AI agents act like a panel of doctors, questioning a simulated patient, ordering tests and debating a diagnosis. On 304 difficult New England Journal of Medicine cases, the system got 83% right against 36% for generalist doctors working alone with reference materials.

Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman called the result a step toward 'medical superintelligence' — the capacity to surpass the strongest human-led health systems in medical reasoning. Microsoft plans a real-patient study at Beth Israel Deaconess to see whether it helps in practice.
