THE SHORT VERSION
JACK CLARK TOLD THE IMF: $44 TRILLION ECONOMY BY 2030 — OR ‘GREAT PERIL’
Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said an internal company model forecasts that, under certain conditions, AI could lift U.S. economic output by almost 50% by 2030, to about $44 trillion from just over $30 trillion today. Clark conceded the figure sounds outlandish, but argued AI is sharply accelerating scientific discovery, and that growth on that scale would require entirely new industries and inventions to power it.
Clark paired the forecast with a warning. He said evidence is growing of a singularity in which AI progress outpaces human control, and that the coming acceleration will bring great wealth and potentially great peril, with a window of only a few years for policymakers to act. He called for international cooperation on unusually strict rules, the tightest oversight for biological research, and acknowledged job losses in highly exposed fields such as call centers even as AI creates new kinds of work.
