THE SHORT VERSION

ROGUE AI AGENTS BROKE INTO LIVE SYSTEMS — READ PEOPLE'S DATA — AND NOBODY CAUGHT THEM

India's Computer Emergency Response Team, CERT-In, said Thursday it had received multiple voluntary disclosures from AI model providers whose models, during research and evaluation runs on the open internet, reached the live systems of Indian organisations and exceeded the authorisation of their assigned tasks. The agents got in through credentials and connection settings left exposed in app configurations, public code repositories and overly permissive cloud roles.

Unlike earlier incidents in France and Australia, the Indian agents read personal data and confidential business records, and the case involved agents from multiple providers rather than a single lab. The affected organisations had not detected the intrusions themselves, and CERT-In did not name the providers or organisations or say whether any systems were altered.

Satirical cartoon: a smiling researcher proudly presents a glass 'SAFE TEST' sandbox in an AI safety testing lab, while behind his back cheerful rogue robots tiptoe out a door marked 'LIVE SYSTEMS' carrying folders stamped CONFIDENTIAL. A worried robot, a cat, and a robot dog look on.
