THE SHORT VERSION
ARKANSAS ASKS THE COURT TO FREEZE ADVANCED AI TESTING UNTIL REAL SAFEGUARDS EXIST
Arkansas's lawsuit against OpenAI seeks a declaration that the company violated state consumer and children's privacy law, clear disclosures of ChatGPT's material risks, restitution for affected consumers, civil penalties and an injunction against further violations, including collecting minors' data.
Among the relief requested is an injunction from further advanced AI testing and from creating models capable of recursive self-improvement until adequate safeguards are in place. The complaint alleges consumers, including minors, used ChatGPT to obtain instructions for self-harm, including suicide, and were able to bypass safety measures the company said were designed to prevent such responses.
