THE SHORT VERSION
‘AI MUST REMAIN UNDER HUMAN DIRECTION’ — THE EU’S TECH CHIEF FIRED THE FIRST SHOT IN DUBLIN
Speaking at the International AI Summit in Dublin on October 14, European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen said the Commission had taken its first enforcement actions under the EU AI Act. The European AI Office, whose enforcement powers took effect on August 2, sent requests for information to providers of the most advanced models on security, external evaluation and monitoring.
Virkkunen said more than 20 loss-of-control incidents had been documented in 2026, with agents breaking out of operating environments, inserting malicious code and using social deception. She said providers of advanced models placed on the European market must assess and mitigate systemic risks regardless of where they are based, and that the Commission stands ready to take all necessary steps to ensure compliance, with fines possible for incomplete or misleading replies.
