The story behind the cartoon
Reddit announced on Thursday, October 29, that it will move to a primarily logged-in experience: signing in will be required to fully access most of the site, a break with 21 years as an open front page of the internet. Chief executive Steve Huffman outlined the plan on the company's third-quarter earnings call, saying Reddit will test the logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the United States this quarter before any wider rollout. The stated reason is data scraping: unlogged browsing has become the easiest route for AI companies and data brokers to harvest Reddit's corpus without a deal.
The move comes with a cost Reddit is stating out loud. Huffman warned that daily active unique visitors could fall by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from about 130 million if search-referral traffic keeps declining; search referrals fell by more than one million a week on average during October, and US daily actives slipped 2% to 50.7 million. Shares fell more than 10% in extended trading after the announcement, even though third-quarter revenue beat estimates. The bet is that logged-in users, who already drive more than 80% of monetization, are worth more than the anonymous crowd.
Reddit's data is the prize in the fight. The company licenses its corpus to OpenAI and Google, and it has sued Anthropic, Perplexity and three data-scraping firms, accusing them of collecting its content without permission. At the same time, the search traffic that once delivered millions of readers to Reddit threads is drying up as AI answers and summaries give people the gist without the click — the same shift that has squeezed publishers across the web, and one that is now cutting into Reddit's own visitor counts.
The joke in Zimbo's cartoon is the velvet rope at the door of the internet's clubhouse: a burly bouncer in sunglasses demands ID from everyone in line, while would-be visitors turn and walk away and the club inside sits empty. Reddit is not just locking out the scrapers — it is carding the regulars too, and it is willing to shrink its own crowd to do it. The open internet's front page now has a doorman, and the doorman does not care how long you have been coming here.
