SHE TOOK AMD WHEN IT WAS IN TROUBLE. NOW SHE'S CHASING NVIDIA

Su came out of MIT electrical engineering, learned the chip business at IBM and Freescale, and took over AMD in 2014 during a major turnaround. She pushed it into the center of the AI compute race — the MI300 accelerators are her swing at Nvidia.

1. 1994

   THE MIT ELECTRICAL ENGINEER ENTERS THE CHIP BUSINESS

   After earning three electrical-engineering degrees from MIT, Su worked at Texas Instruments and then spent thirteen years at IBM in engineering and semiconductor leadership roles.

2. 2007

   FREESCALE MAKES HER CTO

   Su joined Freescale Semiconductor as chief technology officer and later led its networking and multimedia business before AMD recruited her in 2012.

   Su joined AMD as senior vice president and general manager of Global Business Units, responsible for product strategy and business execution.

   AMD named Su chief operating officer, consolidating business units, sales and global operations under her as part of a multi-year turnaround.
