THE SHORT VERSION
Microsoft's AI Frontiers is over — its founder quit, blaming scaling-only AI
John Langford, a founding leader of Microsoft Research's AI Frontiers group, announced on November 6 that the roughly 50-person team is over — and that he has left Microsoft. The group, formed in 2023 after ChatGPT to run organized AI research, built the AutoGen agent framework and the Fara computer-use agent.
The break came after a September reorganization folded AI Frontiers into Microsoft AI, run by former Inflection leadership. Langford writes that the two philosophies were incompatible: “the core philosophy there is scaling, and aggressively not research” — and that there was “plenty of evidence that they just did not really want us.”
Langford calls the scaling-only focus “both misdirected and not fun,” arguing returns to research are real — one technique his team worked on could halve training and inference costs. Microsoft has not publicly confirmed a formal shutdown; every other founding AI Frontiers leader, Langford says, reached the same conclusion he did.
