THE SHORT VERSION

OpenAI buys Pierre to give Codex its own code vault

OpenAI announced on November 4 that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, whose Trees and Diffs libraries already run inside the Codex app, and fold Pierre's Code Storage product into Codex — extending the coding agent from writing code toward storing, reviewing, and shipping it. Financial terms were not disclosed, closing is subject to regulatory approvals, and the two companies stay independent until it closes.

Axios framed the deal as OpenAI taking aim at GitHub, the Microsoft-owned home of code storage, and it lands two days after OpenAI's own Pando post showed agent-written code straining its monorepo, with median push latency cut nearly 80% by the new Git backend. Pierre's distributed Git store is built for machines, already backs AI builders including Lovable and Bolt, and its open-source projects will stay open.
