THE SHORT VERSION

OpenAI offers Georgia's grid 1,000 MW back when it strains

OpenAI launched its Grid Protectors Program on November 2, promising that the compute campuses it builds itself will cut power when the local grid is under strain, starting with a planned 3,200-megawatt campus in Effingham County, Georgia.

Under a 25-year deal with Georgia Power, the utility can trim up to 1,000 megawatts — about 31% of the campus's peak load, roughly the electricity of 700,000 homes — during extreme weather or demand surges. OpenAI says it will pay the site's full infrastructure and electric-service costs.

The catch, stated by OpenAI itself: flexibility cannot replace new power supply and transmission, and no other campus has published curtailment terms yet — outside Georgia it is still a promise.
