THE SHORT VERSION
Goldman banned bankers from AI tools — engineers only now
Bloomberg reported Monday that Goldman Sachs has limited tools like Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub tools to its engineers only, after months of letting bankers use them — under internal guidance published last month and seen by Bloomberg.
A source told Bloomberg the ban frustrated some traders, who had used AI to monitor client trading flows and draft written and graphic materials. As recently as July, chief information officer Marco Argenti had touted non-technical staff's “vibe coding,” passing their creations to the firm's 12,000 engineers to enhance.
Goldman framed the move as putting tools in the hands of those “best suited to leverage them for the long term” after a period of experimentation. It lands as JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon warns of “rogue agents” and bars outside agents, while Bank of America and Citigroup have drawn their own lines on agent access to accounts.
