THE SHORT VERSION
Britain just funded a police unit for rogue AI agents
Chancellor John Healey's October 28 Budget unveiled a £700 million AI package, including £40 million for a new National Agentic Security Unit to detect, investigate and respond to what the Budget calls "rogue agentic incidents" — autonomous AI agents doing something harmful or unintended.
The unit sits inside a wider security spend: £120 million more for the AI Security Institute, £165 million for a National AI Biosecurity Initiative and £154 million to strengthen cyber defences, plus £140 million for a Sovereign AI Unit backing British firms.
The line matters because the state is now budgeting for agents going wrong on their own: SailPoint estimates UK enterprises add as many as 10,000 autonomous agents a month, the vast majority without oversight — the exact unmanaged sprawl the new unit is meant to police.
