Mistral released the weights of Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, on October 29 — a 1-trillion-parameter multimodal model that anyone can download, inspect and run on their own machines instead of renting through a company's service.

Three weeks of extra training since its early-October preview lifted the model to 41% on Terminal-Bench for agentic coding and 51% on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, which tests finding, reproducing and patching software vulnerabilities; Mistral says it refuses 96.6% of malicious cyber requests.

Mistral's own VP of science, Pierre Stock, states the trade-off plainly: once the model is out, 'it's impossible to contain access' — the same openness that frees defenders from vendor lock-in also puts a frontier cyber model in anyone's hands.
