THE SHORT VERSION

Microsoft beat Wall Street: $92.3 billion, Azure up 48%

Satirical cartoon: Merv the worried robot, in a suit at a Microsoft desk, hands a golden envelope labeled VOLUNTARY EXIT to a worried employee with a backpack, while behind him a giant shark-mouthed AI data center gobbles a conveyor belt of dollar bills; a tabby cat watches from the desk.

Microsoft reported $92.3 billion in revenue for the quarter ended September 30, up 19% from a year earlier, with operating income of $45.9 billion and net income of $36.6 billion. Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 30% to $63.9 billion, and chief financial officer Amy Hood said results exceeded expectations across revenue, operating income and earnings per share.

Azure revenue grew 48%, and commercial remaining performance obligation — the backlog of future cloud commitments — jumped 73% to $677 billion, the clearest sign yet of how much paying demand sits behind the AI infrastructure buildout.

The results arrive two days after Microsoft offered about 60,000 employees a voluntary exit — a beat reported while the company asks roughly a quarter of its workforce to leave to help fund that same buildout.
