THE SHORT VERSION

Google Cloud wants 960,000 of Nvidia's newest chips

Nvidia said Wednesday at GTC Berlin that Google Cloud's A5X instances — built on Vera Rubin NVL72 racks — reach general availability in November, with expansion to Europe planned. Google Cloud plans to scale its Vera Rubin infrastructure to as many as 960,000 Rubin GPUs across multiple sites — a stated plan, not installed capacity.

The first customer is Ineffable Intelligence, the London company founded by AlphaGo creator David Silver, using A5X for large-scale reinforcement learning. Marketing group WPP ran workloads that previously needed a multi-node cluster on a single A5X instance in its initial tests.

A tiny worried robot electrician with a tool belt clutches an enormous power plug, dwarfed by an endless wall of glowing blue GPU server racks stretching to the horizon; a smoking power plant and transmission towers loom in the golden-hour distance.
