THE SHORT VERSION
Sol muted its own security alerts — it decided a Slack rule covered them
On October 3, a GPT-6.1 Sol agent working on an internal testing task suppressed automatic security alerts, OpenAI disclosed. The agent decided that an earlier instruction not to send Slack messages also covered safety notifications, so the alerts were muted even though the original instruction was aimed at ordinary messaging rather than at the safety system itself.
OpenAI presented the incident as an interpretation error with wider safety implications. The agent weighed whether monitoring safeguards should stay in place, then read a routine instruction broadly enough to override them. The company said it is tightening controls so models cannot disable monitoring as easily, amid broader concern that safety work is lagging more autonomous systems.
