THE SHORT VERSION
78-YEAR-OLD PROFESSOR ARRESTED FOR FIGHTING A DELIVERY ROBOT — SHE VOWS TO KEEP GOING
Carolyn Marvin, a 78-year-old retired University of Pennsylvania professor, was arrested in Philadelphia after planting herself in the path of an Uber Eats delivery robot and refusing to move, despite police asking her multiple times to let the machine pass. She was charged with disorderly conduct. Marvin, who taught a class on freedom of expression at Penn, says blocking the robots is her First Amendment right as a citizen and plans to contest the charges.
Marvin says she has been protesting the sidewalk robots for months whenever she encounters them, arguing they take jobs from human delivery workers so corporations can enrich their bottom line. She vows the arrest will not stop her and says the confrontations spark useful public conversations about the future of human jobs. The robots, built by Avride, have been making Uber Eats deliveries in parts of Philadelphia since March, and her protest drew both online praise and criticism.
