A 15-year-old former Riverview High School student in Florida is facing charges after deputies say she used an AI-altered image to make a school shooting threat appear to come from her ex-boyfriend. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office account reported by CBS News, administrators received an email on October 14 containing a screenshot of an Instagram post threatening a shooting at the school, apparently from a male student. Detectives interviewed him and determined he had not made it.

Investigators linked the message to his former girlfriend, and deputies say she admitted sending the email and knowing the screenshot had been altered with AI. She was arrested on charges of a written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting or act of terrorism, unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and disrupting a school campus or function. No shooting occurred. The report notes that an arrest is not a conviction and the case still has to move through the legal process.
