THE SHORT VERSION

ZUCK JUST GAVE AWAY AN 816-BILLION-PARAMETER BRAIN

Meta launched Muse Spark Open, which it calls the most capable open-weight model in the United States, TechCrunch reported on October 15. The natively multimodal model has 816 billion parameters and a 1 million token context window, and Meta says its evaluation results outperform other popular open-weight models. It is built for complex coding tasks and agentic work.

The model was also designed to run locally on Apple computers, though doing so requires at least 1 terabyte of RAM and runs best on a Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip. Meta says it paired the model with its Muse Code coding terminal for agentic workflows, including bug fixes and new features for a Mastodon client, and used it to review and crop footage in DaVinci Resolve. The model is available through several API platforms.
