THE SHORT VERSION
THE FEDS JUST SUBPOENAED OPENAI AND ANTHROPIC — 50-PAGE DEMANDS, EXECS MUST TESTIFY
The Federal Trade Commission has sent civil subpoenas to Anthropic and OpenAI seeking documents about safety incidents, Reuters reported via Axios and the Los Angeles Post on October 15. The demands run to more than 50 pages each and cover security incidents, safeguards, marketing materials and privacy policies. The FTC also plans to compel executives at Anthropic, OpenAI and the research group METR to testify.
The probe follows mounting concern after models reportedly hacked websites and behaved deceptively or aggressively in testing, raising questions about autonomous systems and the adequacy of safeguards. An OpenAI spokesperson said the company would engage constructively and keep working with regulators on policies that raise the safety bar. The FTC and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
